By Sanjib Mukherjee,

Indian spirituality is blessed to have been graced by so many enlightened masters, who have tirelessly devoted themselves to helping mankind reach their highest state of spiritual awareness. One of the most influential and coveted saints of recent times has been Swami Vikekananda, the foremost disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.

Swami Vivekananda was a visionary and his writings are filled with passion, vigour and a call to action for everyone to take full responsibility of their lives. He was quite often very outspoken in his quest for spreading the eternal truths of vedanta philosophy, and thus become an enormously respected individual across the globe.

Of all the many books written by Swamiji, perhaps  “Voice Of Freedom”. would be the easiest one to get started with. The book is a collection of Vivekananda’s work over a period of time, where his devotees transcribed his public speeches and collected them for future reference. The writings are very clearly presented in a manner easily digestible for both a complete spiritual beginner and those further advanced on their journey.

Practical issues, such as work, family, knowledge, meditation and faith are covered in great detail, and provide a wonderful introduction to the finer aspects of spiritual awakening. The book will only take a week or so to read, and can be constantly referred to as a point of reference.

This book was first recommended me to around 10 years ago by a priest and it set me up beautifully for understanding how ancient yogic philosophies can practically be utilised for the modern day lifestyles we live today. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the simplicity of Vivekananda’s message and had an intense yearning to read and learn more once I had finished the book. Very few scriptures have had this kind of an effect on me, and thus why I wanted to bring this little known treasure to your attention.

Reading “Voice Of Freedom” serves as the perfect introduction to understanding the many other great texts written by Swami Vivekananda. I hope you get as much enjoyment and fulfillment from the book as I experienced all those years ago.

Peace,
Sanjib
